New electric bike has Portland roots

The electric bike is more luxury than one may have thought. The electric bike comes with a fender, lights, cargo basket and enough juice to give you a lift on those tough hills. This electric bike was made in the bike town of America. Traveling on two wheels has never been easier.

It’s no secret why some refer to Portland as “Bike Town USA.” People love to travel on two wheels around here and one man is taking the bike to a new level.

Portland native Adam Vollmer helped create the Faraday Porteur, or E-bike. It has batteries built right into the frame and can give the rider a little bit of help when going over hills and through headwinds.

“It also has features that a city bicyclist might appreciate like built-in high-quality lights, fenders a cargo rack in the front that comes on and off,” he said.

The bike is still evolving. Vollmer said he would eventually like to build an app for the bike and even install a Bluetooth feature.

The bike was first designed last year during the Oregon Manifest bicycle design competition. Vollmer, then working for design firm IDEO, lead the way to build an electric bike which won the People’s Choice Award. Vollmer then left IDEO to found Faraday Bicycles.

Faraday bicycles will be in Portland on Saturday for those who want to see them in person. They will be at the PSU Farmers Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and at Clever Cycles on Ninth Avenue and Hawthorne from noon to 5 p.m…Continue Reading
